Science
Science triggers excitement and curiosity of our pupils. Our aim is to develop pupils’ minds, and scientific knowledge. At Wybers Wood we encourage the children to engage in practical learning to build up theories, predictions and to challenge scientific ideas.
We use over-arching ‘BIG’ questions for each year group. This provides pupils with a foundation to build upon and acquire new knowledge and skills. Pupils are encouraged to ask their own questions within their science topic and follow their own lines of scientific enquiry. We want them to understand how scientific developments can change the world we live in. Pupils’ oracy skills are developed through the use of discussion and new vocabulary and we want to create a culture of ‘Science is for Everyone’

In Reception, pupils explore the world around them. They identify, discuss and recognise changes and patterns amongst living things and their environment. Through continuous provision, pupils have access to scientific equipment. Equipment such as magnets and magnifying glasses encourage first-hand exploration and discussion. They are exposed to the foundations of scientific concepts. Pupils take part in simple investigations. This equips them with the introductory skills and knowledge for their science journey ahead.
In Key Stage 1, pupils consolidate and build on prior learning by investigating a range of topics. Pupils work in a range of ways to construct and ask simple questions. They make simple observations and learn to use scientific equipment safely and in different ways. Pupils in Key Stage 1 learn how to gather and record their scientific data and start to interpret that of others.
In Key Stage 2, pupils lead their own investigations by using a range of scientific approaches. They interpret, record and share their data in a variety of ways and use this to draw conclusions. Pupils are challenged to prove their scientific knowledge to others through presentational talk. They then use this knowledge to make further predictions for later investigations.

Science Week 2025
This year to celebrate Science Week our KS2 pupils had a science careers fayre. We had people in from local companies and businesses to give our pupils an insight into their jobs and inspire our future scientists. We had aerospace engineers, mechanical engineers, chemical engineers, science teachers and a Pharmaceutical Microbiologist – the children enjoyed learning about the different careers that they could pursue.
‘I really enjoyed the careers fayre because I found out a lot about different jobs that you can do’. Chester.
‘I enjoyed seeing the cow brain and found out that you have liquid surrounding your brain, so when you spin around you feel dizzy because your brain is still moving in the liquid’. Gabriel.

‘I learnt how fast a rocket goes around the earth before the gravitational pull takes it into space’. Oliver
In KS1 we having been working on making observations and recording our findings as we grow sea monkeys! The children have been very excited to watch the process of the sea monkeys hatching.
‘I am excited to see when they hatch and turn into sea monkeys’. Betty.
‘I want to see what the eggs look like!’ Harry
‘I’m excited to see what sea monkeys look like’. Alannah
‘I’m looking forward to seeing how long it takes them to hatch – I predicted it will take them 2 weeks!’. Arlo.

Eco-Warriors
Our Eco Warriors have decided for the Summer Term 2025 our focus is going to be on Litter.
To achieve this goal we are going to look at how we can pick up litter after snack time. We thought about using litter pickers, dust pan and brush and having more bins especially on the KS2 playground. In our next meeting we are going to create some posters to remind everyone that we are a litter free school and that we need to keep our environment litter free. We will keep you updated on our progress.

Science Week 2023
This year during science week we had a range of activities for the children to take part in. Firstly, every class created a wind powered car out of recyclable materials. They then had to test their wind powered vehicle to see how far it travelled. Well done to the Year 5 boys for travelling the furthest distance within the school.
Early Years and Key Stage 1 children enjoyed a visit from Lee at Captivating Creatures. He brought in a variety of animals for the children to handle which supported their science learning for the term. The children (and staff!) were extremely brave and loved handling the animals and learnt lots of new facts.
In Key Stage 2, Harry from the Science Boffins came into deliver hands on workshops for the children. Year 3 and 4’s workshop was called ‘Plasma Balls and Playful Polymers’. Year 5’s ‘Space-tacular’ workshop linked to what they had been learning about Space and deepened their understanding. Finally, the Year 6’s had a variety of mysteries to solve in ‘Incredible Illusions’.
